Top 10 Film Scores Which Were Tarnished by the Movie Itself

There are many aspects to film which are more important to some people than others. For me, the score is one of the most vital parts to a film. If a movie doesn’t have a score I enjoy, it is already on the back-step. This isn’t to say I don’t enjoy films that have scores I am not particularly fond of, it’s just that there is a greater chance of me enjoying the movie if it does. A great score is a work of art in itself, and I find it a great shame if someone doesn’t get to exp

Scene of the Week: Return of the Jedi - Luke Confronts The Emperor

In the second instalment of our new weekly feature, I’m going to look at the confrontation between Luke and The Emperor in Return of the Jedi. RotJ is the final instalment of the original Star Wars trilogy, and is full of classic moments, but the scene in the throne room of the second Death Star is right up there with the best moments in the entire Star Wars universe. RotJ stars, as I’m sure we all know, the fantastic former Actor of the Week winner Mark Hamill as Luke Skywal

Solo: A Star Wars Story Review

When Solo: A Star Wars Story was announced, I have to be honest, I felt that a film about the legendary character Han Solo, from the original Star Wars trilogy, didn’t need to be made. One of the many great things about Han Solo is the mystery about his background and also the charm Harrison Ford brought to the character. Sadly after seeing this film, my thoughts before release were confirmed. Unlike the Han Solo we know in the original Star Wars trilogy, Solo does not star H

Actor of the Week: Felicity Jones

Our Actor of the Week this week hails from the West Midlands in the United Kingdom, just up the road from us here at Life of Films! She’s been plenty of places since then, including a galaxy far, far away - the wonderful Felicity Jones. Jones has been in several high-profile films and sagas, showcasing the fact that she is, more and more, a go-to name for quality, further backed up by having an Oscar nomination to her name. Her early career saw her appear in a number of TV se

Actor of the Week: Lupita Nyong'o

This week sees our Actor of the Week prize awarded to a woman who has been a part of several massive films and franchises in the last five years or so; the unmistakable Lupita Nyong’o. Superheroes, galactic escapades, and everything in between, Nyong’o has covered a lot of ground in a short space of time, catapulting her to the forefront of shortlists and awareness alike. There’s no better place to start than her film debut, and it was no ordinary debut. Working under the wid

Actor of the Week: Andy Serkis

This week’s Actor of the Week winner is, in many ways, a modern pioneer in a particular field of acting; the genius that is Andy Serkis. Largely speaking, Serkis is a pioneer because of his work in motion capture for several gargantuan film series. That being said, he is an excellent actor in or out of the mo-cap suit. It’s difficult to know where to start with Serkis’ back catalogue, given his prolificity, but his work in the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit films seems more than ad

Trailer Review: Solo - A Star Wars Story

This week we were treated to trailers galore, courtesy of the Super Bowl, as is now an annual occurrence. One of these trailers was for Solo: A Star Wars Story, and it was our first, long-awaited look at the film that has had its share of turmoil. After a number of viewings, my view, along with a fair few people I’ve spoken to, was simply ‘meh, looks alright’. The big reason for this is, with no disrespect to Alden Ehrenreich, that it simply isn’t Han Solo if it isn’t Harriso

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Review

***Spoiler Warning*** As many of you may be aware already, we here at Life of Films are not big fans of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but we appreciated the foundations it had laid with the new characters like Rey and Finn. There is a good mystery around these characters such as who Rey’s parents are, and how Finn managed to defect from the new evil force looming over the galaxy - The First Order, ran by another mysterious figure in Supreme Leader Snoke who seemed like he had

Actor of the Week: Harrison Ford

With the long-awaited The Last Jedi out this weekend, it seemed like a fitting choice to have Han Solo himself, Mr Harrison Ford, as our Actor of the Week. The great thing about Ford is that, even though he has played one of the most iconic characters in cinema history, in Solo, he has not been held back by this like many actors can be. We see this in his performance of another iconic character - Indiana Jones. In 1977 the world was properly introduced to Harrison Ford as we

Guest Blog: What if Ben Solo Trained With Anakin Skywalker’s Lightsaber...?

Before the final fight scene of The Force Awakens, Finn picks up Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber to prepare to duel with Kylo Ren, Ren then says to Finn “That lightsaber, it belongs to me”. To me this implies fully that Kylo Ren knows all about that lightsaber and who it belonged to in the past. Now Kylo Ren has shown himself to be a pretty big fan of Darth Vader, who is his grandfather, and is probably well versed in Vader’s history. So it’s totally plausible that he also knew

Actor of the Week: Mark Hamill

It’s Actor of the Week time again, and this week we have someone who is very special to Life of Films - the iconic Mark Hamill. Mark is an obvious choice for Actor of the Week, given that he is a crucial figure in one of the most successful movie franchises of all time - Star Wars. Mark Hamill had dabbled in acting from a young age, but the role which made him a household name was his portrayal of Luke Skywalker in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope. For anyone who has been living

The Force Awakens or The Farce Awakens?

****Spoiler Warning**** We, here at Life of Films, are huge Star Wars fans, so when we say we don’t like The Force Awakens, this isn’t said lightly. Sadly though, we are certainly in the minority when it comes to this opinion, but I do believe any true Star Wars fan would know this is the weakest film of the franchise. So where to start when it comes to dissecting this film, and the areas which I felt let the movie down? I think the best place to begin is its manipulation on

Who Brought Balance To The Force?

I feel that the conversation about who actually brought balance to The Force is one many Star Wars fans have had, with some believing it was Anakin, but others siding more with that it was in fact Luke. In this blog, I am going to put my view on who I think brought balance to The Force. So who do I think it was? I believe it was both Anakin and Luke Skywalker. I know that sounds like the easy choice, but stick with me! I think the best way to explain myself is to start at t

Is Universe Building Ruining The Art of Film?

Ever since we saw Tony Stark talking to General Ross at the end of The Incredible Hulk back in 2008, something happened to cinema that has now changed films forever. This was the start of building a movie universe, where characters from one film would crossover into another character’s film, making it look as if everything that was happening in these individual films was all part of this single world. I was 15 when this all started, and I was completely sold on the idea. The

Scene Review: The Empire Strikes Back - "I am your father."

If there was one scene everyone knows, my money would be on this one. Believe it or not, there are people that haven’t seen any Star Wars, and yet, still quote/reference this scene. I was born in ‘88, 8 years after this film was made, and because of its popularity I was unfortunate to have grown up with Star Wars being established already, and therefore saw this film already well aware Vader was Luke’s father. However, I’ve now seen ESB many times, and the impact is undoubted

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Teaser Trailer

It’s finally here! The trailer for The Last Jedi seems like it has been owed to us forever! We had plenty of information on The Force Awakens by the time that film was only 8 months away, but here we are. Whilst I felt fulfilled, in terms of finally getting something, I also felt underwhelmed as to the amount. But upon reflection, and several viewings, I think this is a good thing, as I’m a little tired of spoiler-heavy trailers. Possibly ridiculously, I’d be happy to see not
